Coto de las Canteras

The “Petra” of Andalusia

Just outside the town of Osuna, in the heart of Andalusia, lies one of southern Spain’s most extraordinary and little-known treasures: the Coto de las Canteras. Often called the “Petra of Andalusia”, this breathtaking site carved into sandstone over the centuries is a perfect blend of art, history, and nature.

The place combines art, nature and the past in a unique way. Its enormous sandstone walls, which change color with the light of day, keep the traces of the stonemasons who worked here for more than two thousand years. Today, the Coto de las Canteras is a heritage and artistic space of enormous value, converted into a symbol of the cultural identity of Osuna and the deepest soul of Andalusia.

Osuna

A history carved in stone

During Roman times, this area was the main quarry of ancient Urso, the name by which Osuna was known. From here was extracted the stone used to build temples, walls and buildings that still today make up the monumental landscape of the city.
Each block tells a story: the story of generations of men who with their effort and mastery gave shape and character to the architecture of the entire region.

With the passage of time, the Coto de las Canteras ceased to be a place of work to become a true sanctuary of art and culture. Its walls, more than 50 meters high, became canvases for contemporary sculptors who painted faces, mythological figures and symbols of Andalusia. The result is a space that seems suspended in time, where the stone comes to life and the visitor feels part of something eternal.

A natural stage of light, art, and emotion

Coto de las Canteras is located in a natural setting of great beauty, surrounded by olive groves and gentle hills that reflect the essence of the Andalusian landscape.
Its interior houses a large hall carved into the rock, with amazing acoustics and amplitude, which today hosts concerts, exhibitions and cultural events. This impressive space combines the power of nature with human creativity, offering an unforgettable visual and emotional experience.

Coto de las Canteras

It is not surprising that this place has been the scene of filming and documentaries that seek to capture the authenticity of Andalusia. The combination of light, texture and silence makes Coto de las Canteras one of the most photogenic and inspiring corners of southern Spain.
